Ice-fishing, basketball and what-not!

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

One can hate the winter or embrace it, I am inclined to do the second, I love it!

As my dear left thumb is out of cross-country skiing for yet another winter, i look forward do those precious few hours on alpine ski’s and ice-fishing. Unfortunately, I am yet to do any skiing this winter but today was my second trip to an ice-covered lake. Lake I visited today is near, some 25 km or so from the house and according to urban myth, boasts a big-grown perch population. It be true or not, I cant really say, in my say 3 hours on the lake I caught 4 fish in total, and none of them was anything remotely to the size allegedly in the lake. That’s ok though, it gives you hope that next time you may hook a giant.

As far as basketball and my coaching career goes with VB D2 team, well, we are slumming. Can’t get a W, lack of interest and will to do the effort it takes to win is taking its toll on me and the team. A clean slate and a fresh start is not likely to emerge just now so we need to hang in there.

On the what-not note, Swedish kayakers and a canoer are working their buns of, with three guys being in Pau for a few more weeks training and one getting his triceps together at home, in the icy waters of Falun. Must say that I am hugely impressed by their grit and effort. Will be most awesome to follow them yet another season.

You win some, you learn some!

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

Well Alvik-game went down the drain. I walked out on the team in the middle of the third quarter. Guys were talking about being late to parties, goofing on the bench during crutial time-out. That is not a winning attitude in my book, and while the game was very much on, I realized that my way was not the one they opted to take that day.

You can lead a horse to the pool of water, but if the lame is too limp, let him have a last mouthfull, before you put him out of his missery. We as a team lost that game, I as a coach didn’t though, my guys didn’t come ready to play, I walked out on them, and by doing so got me a handfull of lessons to take home. I won by choosing to learn.

Today we played Borlänge, for five minutes. Once the deal was sealed, we started practicing. Rest of the game was just things we did in practice and tryied to convert game-time. Such a long way to go, and we are mid-season. Some are buying into it, some choose to fake it. Collectivly, we won some by learning some. And I am not talking about the final score.

Game Time

So what now?

Yeah, ants-in-the-pants restless kind of guy that I am, I started coaching basketball recently. Club I was involved with needed more coaching staff, and I felt I could contribute so the you have it.

So now I am a coach, ploughing through game tapes, pulling out stats, conditioning the team and being a basketball philosopher. Wierd twist.

Whitewater kayaking you say? Nah, its very much not part of the history, its still my favorite, it just has to share little time I do have with basketball.

So game-time this Saturday, playing in Köping, away for most, but home to me as I work in the little industrial town. Pre-game game viewing till also take in the eminent conference room at my office, cool. We do have great cup of Java.
